What is Castreon
Updated 03 Oct 2026Castreon is a live TV server that runs on your own Linux server. It takes channels from any source, transcodes them when needed and delivers them to players, CDNs or other servers. Everything is managed from a web panel.
What it does
- Capture from network sources (HTTP/HTTPS, HLS, DASH, UDP, SRT, RIST, RTMP) and directly from DVB-C, DVB-T and DVB-T2 cards installed in the server.
- Transcoding to H.264, HEVC (H.265) or AV1, on the CPU or on the graphics card (NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, VA-API). One decode can produce several qualities (ABR).
- Copy without transcoding when the source is already suitable — the lowest resource usage.
- Delivery via HLS (TS or CMAF), DASH, HTTP-TS, SRT, RTMP, UDP and RIST.
- Automatic failover: each channel can have several sources. If the primary source fails, Castreon switches to the next one by itself and returns when the first one works again.
- Supervision: channels that get stuck are restarted automatically, and the panel shows clear alerts (weak DVB signal, failed source, an output that stopped sending, a loaded server).
How it works in practice
- Install Castreon on your server with a single command, copied from your castreon.net account.
- Open the panel in your browser, add your channels and choose for each one how it is transcoded and where it is delivered.
- Castreon starts the channels, keeps them running and tells you in the panel when something is wrong.
The license
Each license runs on one server and defines the edition (for example CPU or NVENC), the number of channels and the included features. Licenses are paid monthly from your castreon.net account and renew automatically. A license can be moved to another server directly from your account.
